KEF Unleashes Universal Wireless Sound System 2.0

By Rachel Cericola

Oh what a tangled web it is behind that A/V cabinet. Unless you have in-wall speakers, adding in surround speakers or just having a lot of speakers in multiple rooms can sure can make for a messy experience. However, it doesn't have to be that way. KEF has just announced its new Universal Wireless System 2.0 product, which promises CD-quality sound without all of the wires.

If the product sounds a little familiar, it's because KEF launched its first Universal Wireless Sound system a few years back. This new 2.0 version boasts enhanced software, a better transmitter, and all at $499 (MSRP) -- which is $100 less than its predecessor.

The KEF Universal Wireless System 2.0 includes two receiving units, each of which features a 50-watt amplifier. According to the company, this slim little system also packs in Advanced Adaptive Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (AAFHSS), advanced error correction technology and uses a narrow signal band to keep it from conflicting with other devices, such as mobile phones, microwaves, wireless LAN routers, and much more. That means if the KEF system detects a signal from one of those devices, it will literally "hop" to a different channel, all while keeping the signal stable. KEF says the process is seamless and takes milliseconds, so users won't even notice the change.

The setup is also apparently simple. Connect the transmitter to a sound source, and each of the two receivers to a speaker and a power outlet. Other that that, there are no buttons, software or wizards. The KEF Universal Wireless System 2.0 system works with both KEF and other brands of loudspeakers, as well as devices with a standard 3.5mm audio jack. That makes it a nice option for a PC or iPod, as well as for 5.1 systems and to bump your current 5.1 system up to 7.1.

"The KEF Universal Wireless System 2.0 eliminates the hassle and aesthetic challenges of running wiring between receivers and loudspeakers," said Alec Chanin, president of KEF America. "With its ease-of-installation and its versatility, this system is perfect for any home entertainment lover who is looking for advanced wireless speakers for virtually any setting or application."
