IMAX and Paramount Challenge Movie Goers to Escape Mission Impossible Style Room

By Chris Boylan

In anticipation of the upcoming blockbuster: "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," Paramount Pictures and Skydance have partnered with IMAX and AMC Theaters to challenge movie-goers to an impossible mission. Do you have what it takes to find the clues and escape a locked room, set to self-destruct in 20 minutes? If you think you can handle that, you might want to check out "Mission: Impossible - Room Escape."

Starting this weekend, "Mission: Impossible Room Escape" is being offered to the public at no charge (by apointment, on a first come, first served basis) at the following AMC IMAX® theatre locations:

  • New York / AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 - July 10 & 11
  • Boston / AMC Loews Boston Common 19 - July 18 & 19
  • San Francisco / AMC Metreon 16 - July 25 & 26
  • Los Angeles / AMC Century City 15 - August 1 & 2

I checked it out earlier this afternoon at the Lincoln Square AMC/IMAX theater and it was a fun little exercise. I was joined by Fox 5's entertainment anchor, Simone Boyce and her husband Michael Green as my fellow IMF team members. NYC area readers can see how we did on Fox 5 News tonight at 10:00 (or check out the live stream at 10 PM Eastern Time tonight on the Friday Night Live news show).

UPDATE: The segment is available on-demand here: "Mission: Impossible - Room Escape on Friday Night Live."

Up to six people can participate in the challenge at a time. It's surprising how quickly 20 minutes can pass when you're frantically trying to identify clues to help in your escape. Even basic math is trickier when you're trying not to explode. In addition to the actual clues, there are plenty of distractions in the room that seem like they might be important, but are really just red herrings.

Fortunately for us, there was also a helper in the room to make hints if we stumbled (which we did). I won't spoil the challenge for those who are planning to do it. But suffice it to say, it wasn't easy and did require some trial and error and analytical thought to complete the mission. We did manage to solve the clues and escape the room with a couple of minutes to spare, due mostly to Ms. Boyce's cleverness. Michael and I only were marginally helpful, but were pretty good at providing comic relief.

"Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" opens in IMAX nationwide on July 31, 2015. Tickets are on sale now at IMAX.com/missionimpossible and amctheatres.com.
