Hitachi Subsidizes Front Projector Upgrades with Trade-In Program

By Peter Suciu

One problem with being an early adopter of new technology is that something even newer is always just around the corner. You can try to keep up with the latest trends, but this can break the bank. Few retailers actually buy back older products, and typically last year's consumer electronics aren't worth very much. Wouldn't it be grand if you could trade them in when trading up, as you do with a car?

Now Hitachi America's Digital Media Division has launched a new program to reward existing and new customers. This is the Hitachi Trade-In Program, which offers customers a way to "trade-in" a used projector for cash back on a purchase of new Hitachi projector. The program not only takes back used Hitachi items but also competing brand projectors as well. It also addresses the issue of eWaste in the process, as it makes it easier to dispose of that old item that you might have otherwise not known what to do with anymore.

The web-based trade-in program is further designed to provide customers with an immediate price quote for their existing projector, where users need merely supply basic information including brand, model number and item condition. Customers register for the program and submit a trade-in claim, which is processed a few weeks after the customer submits a copy of the confirmation e-mail along with proof of purchase for any qualifying new Hitachi projector.

The key part of this process for users is to actually find a qualifying model they desire (complete list is available in a drop-down list on the program web site), and then to follow through on the process. As a result this essentially akin to a rebate rather than a typical "trade-in," but the ability to get money for something that you are replacing isn't really such a bad thing.

Hitachi CP-A52 3LCD projector is meant for the education market, but with 2,000 ANSI lumens and XGA output will work well for a budget home theater system

To facilitate the process Hitachi is working with Market Velocity, a provider of trade-in solutions for various Fortune 1000 high-tech and consumer electronics manufacturers, which will be overseeing the Hitachi trade-in program, and is handling the processing.

"We are very happy to offer the Hitachi Trade-In Program to our loyal customers, who continue to utilize Hitachi projectors in multiple settings across the globe," says John Glad, product manager, Hitachi America, Ltd., Digital Media Division, Business Solutions Group. "Not only will this program help our customers save money, but the trade-ins also represent a way to responsibly recycle aged equipment and reduce material waste."

Time will tell whether Hitachi sees the projected results, but anything that can help facilitate the process and allow consumers to hand in an old item and get something back should be seen in a good (even bright) light.
