HD Sound From a Bar

By Peter Suciu

While many press events may be "open bar," the bar in question at LG Electronics' CES preview event this week was the new sleek yet powerful HD Sound Bar, a 280-watt audio system designed to elevate audio performance, complement LG's advanced flat panel displays and deliver an enjoyable home theater experience without advanced set-up or complicated wiring.

The LSB316 was shown publicly for the first time at LG's CES Sneak Peek in New York City yesterday and will be available early next year. The single bar speaker system is meant to enhance the audio output of an HDTV by adding additional speakers and subwoofer capabilities to produce powerful 2.1 channel virtual surround sound.

The LSB316 includes six speaker drivers housed in a sleek speaker bar that can be placed directly below the TV or even wall mounted. The bar is also accompanied by a wireless subwoofer that can be conveniently placed out anywhere in the room to deliver the bass frequencies.

"LG's new sound bar delivers a great solution for consumers who want to experience enhanced audio performance but may not have space for a full 5.1 home theater system," said Tim Alessi, director of product development, LG Electronics USA.  "The LSB316 not only pumps up the audio performance of programming on TV, but also brings a richer audio experience to music in an easy to set up and use package."

Key features of the bar include 2.1 channel, 280-watt output, via a 2.5-inch Parabola speaker with silk dome tweeter and wireless active front firing subwoofer, two optical inputs, TV Sound ez set-up, portable audio input, USB host for MP3/WMA playback and MPEG2 AAC support. The HD Sound Bar offers several audio modes including Natural EQ, Bass Blast, Clear Voice, VSM (Virtual Surround Matrix) Plus, Game EQ, MP3 Up-Scaling, and Night Mode.

On the wireless front the bar serves up 2.1 TX/RX Bluetooth, which allows users to wirelessly stream music from their Bluetooth-enabled devices including smart phones, tablet PCs or MP3 players. Additionally, the Bluetooth function can transmit sound from a TV program to compatible headphones for late-night viewing without disturbing anyone else in the household.

LG will provide additional details on the HD Sound Bar at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show in January.
