Fox Launches iPhone App for Blu-ray Releases

By Rachel Cericola

Fox wants to sell more Blu-rays and DVDs. As an added incentive to buy upcoming releases, the studio has partnered with Spot411 and The Cimarron Group for FoxPop, which adds even more entertainment for your viewing pleasure.

FoxPop allows viewers to use an iPhone or computer to create an interactive, social experience -- all while watching a movie. The app syncs up with your system using real-time audio recognition technology. While the movie plays, viewers will get pop-up trivia on the iPhone or computer.

Fox wants to make sure its titles keep on giving, offering new trivia every time the viewer watches the film with FoxPop. It also features Facebook and Twitter links and chat features.

"Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Spot411 share the goal to enhance the home entertainment experience and connect like-minded fans," said Ajay Shah, CEO and co-founder, Spot411. "FoxPop is the next step in the evolution of the home entertainment experience, intuitively providing immediate access to movie and TV-related information and content."

The first title to get the FoxPop treatment will be Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, which is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on December 1. Other upcoming titles to include FoxPop features include (500) Days of Summer and Jennifer's Body.

Fox's news comes on the heels of Universal's unveiling of the pocket BLU app, which will allow viewers to use the iPhone or iPod touch to control high-def discs or access exclusive content. The BLU app is available now for free from the App Store. The first Universal title to incorporate BLU features will be Bruno.
