Original Wolf Man (1941) Free 3 Different Ways with Wolfman (2010) Blu-ray

By Chris Chiarella

Universal Studios Home Entertainment is bringing their recent big-screen reimagining of The Wolfman to Blu-ray on June 1st, in a lavish special edition befitting one of the most iconic cinematic monsters of all time. The disc will include both the R-rated theatrical and 16-minute-longer Unrated cuts of the film, along with two alternate endings, BD-Live connectivity, U-Control Bonus View content accessible during the movie, as well as BD-exclusive behind-the-scenes featurettes. The two-disc set also provides a Digital Copy of the movie--which stars Oscar winners Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins--for both iTunes and Windows Media.

But the value-added item that is surely most revolutionary here is the limited-time-only bonus of the original 1941 Lon Chaney Wolf Man, not as a pack-in DVD or even Digital Copy as we know it, rather it will be delivered one of three different ways (or all!) We can choose to:

  • Stream The Wolf Man over BD-Live, with the Blu-ray disc inserted in the internet-connected player
  • Send the movie to a portable device via Universal's pocket BLU application
  • Unlock the movie on the computer using the unique Digital Copy code at the www.UniversalHiDef.com  website

As we've written about before, the free, downloadable pocket BLU app for iPhone/iPod touch, Blackberry, Android, PC and Mac enables these devices to work seamlessly with a network-connected Blu-ray player, bringing enhanced features such as a customized Remote Control, a QWERTY-style Keyboard for interactive data entry, Video Timeline to access any point in the movie, plus Mobile-to-Go, which has previously allowed us to save selected bonus content to a portable device or stream it over Wi-Fi. Free previews of other pocket BLU-enabled titles are also available.

The first-of-its-kind offer for the bonus classic Wolf Man runs through the end of the year.
