Epson Unveils Incredibly Bright New LCD Home Theater Projectors at CEDIA

By Rachel Cericola

Epson, manufacturer of the majority of LCD modules for the world's projector market, is unveiling some new home theater projectors in Denver this week at CEDIA 2013. One of them, intended for the high-end home installation market, claims a brightness of a whopping 6000 lumens -- giving the term "light cannon" new meaning.

That stunning image is part of Epson's new crop of Ultra-Bright Pro Cinema projectors. Specifically designed for larger home theaters, the new lineup includes the PowerLite Pro Cinema G6900WU, the PowerLite Pro Cinema G6550WU and the PowerLite Pro Cinema 4855WU.

All three of the Pro Cinema projectors deliver a full HD 1080p 2D image and are equipped with a center lens design with vertical and horizontal lens shift for a flexible setup. Other features include Point and Arc image correction, a Faroudja DCDi chipset, and a split-screen feature. The Pro Cinema G6900WU and G6550WU also pack in frame interpolation and HDBaseT connectivity. The latter puts full HD video, audio, network and control commands into a single CAT 5/6 cable that can be extended up to 328 feet.

Epson's PowerLite Pro Cinema Bright Series features a projector with up to 6000 lumens of brightness.

The Epson PowerLite Pro Cinema G6900WU ($7,499) has the 6000 lumens, with the PowerLite Pro Cinema G6550WU ($5,999) packing in 5200 lumens, and PowerLite Pro Cinema 4855WU ($3,799) boasting 4000 lumens. Additional lenses are available for each model, to fit any type of installation needs. All three are shipping now.

Next month, Epson will offer the PowerLite Pro Cinema 6030UB and Pro Cinema 4030, as well as the Home Cinema 5030UB/5030Ube. These options promise up to 2400 lumens, active shutter 3D, an advanced Fujinon OptiCinema lens (2.1 zoom ratio), 480Hz Drive Technology, and a built-in cinema filter. Each one also has a new Black-and-White Cinema mode for viewing older films. For the newer ones, these projectors have THX 2D and 3D Cinema viewing modes. There's even a picture-in-picture mode for watching two sources at once.

The Pro Cinema 6030UB and Home Cinema 5030UB and 5030UBe (wireless) boast contrast ratios of up to 600,000:1 and 2400 lumens of brightness. Each one also has Epson's Super Resolution and FineFrame technology for 2D viewing.

That 5030Ube is a standout for its built-in WirelessHD receiver, as well as an external transmitter with five HDMI inputs. This allows viewers to stream a whole lot of content, without any wires. The Pro Cinema 6030UB, on the other hand, has two anamorphic lens modes for 2.35:1 anamorphic viewing, as well as ISF calibration, color isolation, a ceiling mount, a cable cover and an extra lamp. Both models come packing two pairs of 3D glasses.

For 3D and 2D viewing in full 1080p, the Pro Cinema 4030 has 2000 lumens brightness and a contrast ratio of up to 120,000:1. It also comes with two pairs of 3D glasses, an extra lamp, a ceiling mount and a cable cover.

Epson will start shipping the PowerLite Pro Cinema 6030UB ($3499) and Pro Cinema 4030 ($2499) in late October. The Home Cinema 5030UB ($2599) and 5030UBe ($2899) should start popping up online in mid-October.
