E3 2010: Casio Introduces Green Slim Projector

By Peter Suciu

Business projectors have long been a poor man's way to get the home theater experience without having to shell out too much cash. At CES this year Casio showed off such a device with its line of mercury lamp free projectors. These Green Slim units range in price from $799 to $1,099 are available from pro AV retailers as well as the local big box stores.

So it was no surprise that Casio made its debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Las Vegas this year to show what these compact and affordable little devices can do to enhance the gaming experience. These projectors measure in at under 1.7 inches high, and weigh only 5 pounds, which makes it easy to bring them with you wherever you go.  They feature a mercury-free, laser and LED hybrid light source and DLP imaging technology, providing enough brightness to drive a screen up to 100 inches diagonally. With today's high resolution games for the PC, Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 these projectors can transform any blank wall or projection screen into a life size video wall.

The light source has an estimated life span of approximately 20,000 hours, nearly 10 times that of convention light sources with a high-pressure mercury lamp. The Green Slim projectors are available with XGA (1024x768) resolution, as well as WXGA (1280x800) native resolution, and all are capable of displaying HD via an HDMI input. So while you're not going to get full 1080p resolution, the projectors will do justice to most games, and DVDs and Blu-rays should look pretty good as well.
