Disney to Release The Fox and the Hound as 2-Movie 30th Anniversary Blu-ray

By Rachel Cericola

Release the hounds! Disney is planning to do just that, announcing plans for a 30th anniversary Blu-ray package for The Fox and the Hound. The two-movie collection of the original film and its sequel will be released on August 9, 2011.

The studio says that they will package the 1981 original with The Fox and the Hound 2, which was released on DVD in 2006. This is the first time that either movie will be available in high definition.

The package will include an all-new digitally restored version of the original 1981 film, which follows best friends Copper (voiced by Kurt Russell) and Tod (Mickey Rooney). Tod is an orphaned fox cub who becomes best friends with Copper, a coonhound puppy. Other famous voices include Pearl Bailey, Paul Winchell, Jack Albertson, and Corey Feldman. The sequel is a bit more lighthearted, with a focus on music. It includes an equally impressive vocal cast, including Patrick Swayze, Reba McEntire, Jeff Foxworthy, Vicki Lawrence and Stephen Root.

The 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack will include one Blu-ray with both films. The other two discs will be DVD versions of each film. This package has an MSRP of $39.99. The set will also be available in as a 2-disc DVD set, as well as separately via movie downloads.

One extra that's unique to the Blu-ray will be "Unlikely Friends: A fun and fascinating Collection of Unlikely Friendships in the Animal Kingdom. This is all-new featurette showing just how "friendships know no boundaries." The Blu-ray pack will also include all of the DVD extras, such as the "Best of Friends" sing-a-long, "Passing the Baton: Making of The Fox and the Hound," the "You Know I Will" music video, and a short on "The Making of the Music."
