Denon Puts Big Sound into the D-M40 Micro Hi-Fi System

By Rachel Cericola

Size doesn't really matter -- at least not to anyone in the audio world. To strengthen that point, Denon Electronics is packing a lot of power into its latest Micro Hi-Fi System, the compact D-M40.

Denon has obviously had a lot of success with its M Series. After all, it's been around for about 20 years now. As the latest entry in that popular lineup, the D-M40 is small but mighty, packing in the RCD-M40 CD receiver and the SC-M40 two-way speaker system. This type of system is made for the listener who's looking for a great way to crank out CDs, without dedicating too much space to the actual audio equipment.

Measuring 8.27-by-12.13 inches (plus speakers), the D-M40 is compact enough to put in a bedroom, a home office, or any other space. Heck, it can even squeeze into a bookshelf in your living room. It doesn't take away from the decor, but has a lot to give. It does that via two digital optical inputs to hook up a TV, set-top box or other digital gear, as well as a USB port for playing MP3, WMA, FLAC, WAV and AAC files.

Denon says that the system relies on short signal paths and a specific circuit design to deliver audio that's as close to the original performance as possible. Also worth mentioning is that the D-M40 has an upgraded headphone amplifier section with dedicated Gain Control.

More specifically, the RCD-M40 CD receiver promises 60 watts of total sound, a Triple Noise Reduction Design (T.N.R.D.), iDevice charging during playback and standby mode, a subwoofer pre-out, and a built-in FM/AM tuner. The SC-M40 is a two-way speaker system with a 4.75-inch woofer and a 1-inch soft dome tweeter, as well as a crossover network to separate the woofer and tweeter for a smoother overall sound.

Denon is making the various components of the D-M40 Micro Hi-Fi System available in black. The system is expected to ship in June, with an MSRP of $479.
