Denon, Marantz Get Official About Apple Airplay Support in Home Theater Receivers

By Greg Robinson

While Denon was showing off a fully functional implementation of Apple Airplay in a Denon receiver at CEDIA Expo last month, they weren't allowed to make any official announcements on their support of the new feature in their 2010 receiver line until now.  Now Denon and sister company Marantz have announced the details of their support of Apple's Airplay feature in current 2010 receiver models.

Owners of select Denon and Marantz network-capable devices will be able to purchase an Airplay software update directly through the Denon and Marantz websites. Once installed, these AirPlay-ready components will be able to stream iTunes music playback remotely from a PC or Mac computer located on their home network. And in addition to the music itself, users will be able to access artist information, album art plus elapsed and remaining time of the song currently playing.

Denon models capable of taking advantage of the new AirPlay feature include four A/V receivers - the AVR-4311CI ($1,999), AVR-3311CI ($1,199), AVR-991 ($999), and 100th Anniversary AVR-A100 ($2,499) - plus the company's N7 Networked CD Receiver and 2.0 Channel Speaker System, comprised of the RCD-N7 CD Receiver ($599) and SC-N7 stereo loudspeakers ($199/pair).

On the Marantz side, all of the new IP-based Marantz products, including the SR7005 A/V Receiver ($1,599), AV7005 A/V Preamplifier ($1,499), NA7004 Network Audio Player ($799) and M-CR603 Networked CD Receiver ($699) will be able to take advantage of the AirPlay update.

The software update is expected to become available starting November 25 and it will sell for $49 from the Denon and Marantz official websites.
