Amazon Subsidizes Blu-ray Upgrade with $10 DVD Trade-In Bonus

By Enid Burns

Over the summer the U.S. government introduced a "cash for clunkers" program that was designed to get people to trade in their old gas guzzlers for newer more fuel efficient models. Well, now you can upgrade your home video collection in much the same way, trading in unwanted DVDs, HD DVDs and even Blu-ray discs for credit towards a new purchases. While the trade-in program itself has been available for some time, Amazon enhanced it this month by adding a $10 bonus for any DVD trade-ins worth $50 or more.

Customers who trade-in $50 worth of unwanted discs will get gift cards in their account in the amount of the trade with a $10 bonus coupon applicable toward the purchase of any Blu-ray Disc.  The Movies & TV Trade-In program is a standard fixture for the online retailer but the $10 bonus runs through November 2.

The trade-in program helps consumers justify a purchase on Blu-ray they may have already made on DVD, without the hassle of selling it on eBay. For example, you can trade in LOST: The complete Second Season on DVD for a credit of $7.50, and apply this toward that same set on Blu-ray Disc. Shipping of the used discs to the retailer is free for the trade-in customer and you can choose between US Postal mail or UPS with pre-addressed labels that you print up during the trade-in process.

Want to upgrade your video collection to high def? Amazon.com will now help you do so by letting you trade in old movies for store credit.

Amazon offers trade-in values ranging from a dollar (or sometimes less) for older movies to $19.75 for Toy Story & Toy Story 2, which were released as a two-disc set. A trade-in of The Waltons - The Complete First Five Seasons scores $20, and Gilmore Girls - The Complete First Five Seasons returns $30 from Amazon.  Some very recent titles on DVD and Blu-ray do not show up yet in the Trade-in title search, but over 53,000 titles are eligible for trade-in so sort through those shelves to turn those old silver discs into gold.
