Cosplay on Display at Comic Con 2014

By Lora Grady

When people hear that I'm headed to Comic Con, their first question is usually, "Oh cool - do you dress up?" That is, of course, if their first question isn't "Comic Con - what the heck is that?"

I don't happen to be someone who garbs up for the Con, but that definitely puts me in the minority. Costumed fans are everywhere at Comic Con. They may use these four days to represent their fandoms by dressing as favorite characters, or just take the opportunity to let their alter egos out to play. Many costumes are recognizeable, while some are elaborate flights of fancy that come straight out of the wearer's imagination. Trying to photograph all of the amazing characters and creatures at Comic Con would be dizzying, but here is a selection of some of the sights in and around the con on Friday.

Super Mario Brothers - an arcade classic, resurrected just for the Con.

Steampunk: very big at Comic Con this year.

Sometimes all you need is a big hat.

Did you ever think you would see an Ace Ventura cosplayer? Me neither.

Maleficent_2.JPG
Maleficent got a lot of attention from fellow congoers.

Red_white_dress.JPG
Not an outfit you'd want to travel in, but perfect to pose for photos at Comic Con.

Batman_fans.JPG
These Batman fans turned out in style.

Scissorhands_2.JPG
This dedicated fan took about four hours getting into his gear. Nicely done!

Roses.JPG
This lovely lady was at Comic Con to promote her forthcoming book titled, appropriately enough, "La Rose".

Burn.JPG
This fellow's artwork was certainly eye-catching.

Waldo.JPG
Well, that answers that question.

What did you think?
