Comic-Con: Fans Will Love The Walking Dead and Piranha 3DD Collectible Blu-Rays

By Lora Grady

Visitors to the Anchor Bay booth at this years Comic-Con were treated to a first look at the stellar collectible release of The Walking Dead Season Two on Blu-ray. The package has a limited run of 35,000 units and includes 10 bonus behind the scenes production featurettes that are only available in this edition. Both the collectible and the regular Blu-ray of TWD Season Two will be available on August 28, with the limited edition retailing for $99.99 and the regular set selling for $69.00 (both are available for less online).

The collector's edition is already in the top 200 on Amazon for pre-order sales, and it's easy to see why fans will want to grab this: the fully molded three-dimensional case art features a repulsively realistic zombie head. Ingeniously, and in keeping with the show's gory themes, the only way to unlock the packaging is by sticking the included screwdriver into the zombie's eye. Greg Nicotero, who designed the set, surely knows what the show's fans are dying to see.

Based on the Image Comics series that debuted in 2003 from writer Robert Kirkman and artist Tony Moore, The Walking Dead was developed for television by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green
Mile
) and debuted in 2010 to rave reviews on the AMC network. The gritty series tells the story of a group of survivors fighting to stay alive in the wake of a zombie outbreak. The Walking Dead will return to AMC for a third season this fall.

Along with The Walking Dead, Anchor Bay was promoting the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release of Piranha 3DD (coming September 2) at Comic-Con. The Blu-ray set is a combo pack that features the film on DVD, Blu-ray Disc, Blu-ray 3D Disc and digital copy. A scary-looking moulded Piranha prop in the Anchor Bay booth had us thinking that this would be released in a similar boxed set, but alas that was just wishful thinking.  An Anchor Bay rep later clafiried that the fiendish fish was just a prop.

In addition to these Blu-ray releases, Anchor Bay will also be offering sets of Spartacus: Vengeance (a STARZ Original Series), as well as Halloween 4 and Halloween 5. All will debut in the next several months. The Spartacus release will offer nine extended episodes and audio commentary, while the Halloween Blu-rays represent the HD debuts for both films.

Anchor Bay will also be releasing the feature film, Bait 3D, exclusively on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D Disc this fall. Bait 3D's short pitch is, "Sharks in a supermarket," and it should be a treat for genre fans.

Anchor Bay Entertainment is a leading distributor of independent feature films and home entertainment product, and is the home entertainment division of Starz Media.
