China's TCL Unveils 110-inch 3D LCD HDTV, Sets Sights on Japan, Korea

By Rachel Cericola

TCL has been making a name for itself in the U.S. for quite some time, by offering affordable HDTV solutions through Amazon. Now, the Chinese company is making headlines for something else: a 110-inch 4K 3D LCD TV.

The company's subsidiary, the Shenzhen-based China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co Ltd., just announced the 4K HD 3D LCD screen, saying it's the biggest the world has seen.

"The successful launch of the world's largest 110-inch screen once again proved TCL's research and development capabilities," said Li Dongsheng, Chairman and CEO of TCL. "Not only will TCL benefit from the development of this breakthrough technology, all TV manufacturers in China and overseas, will be able to capitalize on this revolutionary product design."

The technology that he's talking about is something that the company has dubbed "China Star." It's basically one name for all of the video goodies that TCL packed into this unit, such as a 4096 x 2160 resolution, active 3D technology, intelligent and dynamic backlighting, an ultra-high brightness of 800nits, and a 92-percent NTSC color gamut. It also has TCL's own Fine Stereo Performance (FSP) technology.

Oh, the whole thing also features multi-touch technology. So even though you should probably resist the urge to give this giant HDTV a hug, it is a touchscreen. That pretty much means that fingerprints are encouraged -- and with 110 inches, there should be plenty of room for those.

TCL says that the specs "represent the highest standards in the industry currently." Of course, the real hook is the size, which has a screen display area of 3.34 square meters.

He Chengming, CEO of China Star Optoelectronics Technology, also said that the HDTV includes major breakthroughs in the use of high-end lithography, oversized partial affixed technology and advanced backlight techniques. It sounds like TCL is ready to rumble, at least against foreign manufacturers in both Japan and South Korea.

"The launch of the China Stardisplay screen solidifies TCL's internationally competitive edge, and allows TCL to have a greater impact on the flat panel display market," said Gu Zhihua, director of the flat-panel display center at Fudan University. "China will replace Japan and South Korea as the world leader in TV display screens in terms of manufacturing and R&D in three to five years, and will provide a higher level of quality and more cost-effective products to the global community."

That said, don't plan on moving your couch out just yet. The company didn't mention anything about pricing or release dates in its presentation, which has us wondering whether or not TCL plans to market the 110-inch 3D LCD anywhere, let alone in the U.S.

However, if you're in Beijing and looking for another sightseeing stop, check out The Great Hall of the People in Tiananmen Square. TCL just donated two of these massive screens for public display, so you can get a peek there.
