CES: Denon's S-5BD is a Feature-Packed One Device Home Theater Solution

By Dennis Burger

Denon expands its line of integrated single-component home theater solutions with the introduction of the S-5BD BD/Receiver, an audiophile grade 5.1-channel surround sound receiver with a built-in Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player.

The S-5BD's advanced features set it apart from the rest of the integrated BD player/receiver pack, as it were. Not only does it boast two-source, two-zone distribution capabilities, it's also one of the first devices of any kind announced to feature HDMI 1.4 with support of Audio Return Channel. In short, this feature allows for TVs to send multichannel audio back to the receiver, eliminating the need for a separate digital audio connection between the display and receiver.

In addition to all of the usual suspects in terms of features Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, 1080p24 output, DVD upscaling to 1080p, BD-Live the S-5BD also features an RS-232 connection for compatibility with advanced remote control systems, front-panel HDMI and SD Card inputs, along with iPod connectivity via USB and support for Denon's proprietary Networked Control Dock for iPod.

A pair of preamp outputs also makes the unit expandable to 7.1-channel surround, or they can be used as height-channel outputs for Dolby Pro Logic IIz playback.

The S-5BD is expected to begin shipping in March for a suggested retail price of $1799.
