CES: Audiovox DFL01 Adds FLO TV to Portable DVD Player Lineup

By Chris Chiarella

We're a society on the go, and yet the ability to watch TV in remote locations, or while in transit, had remained elusive for the common man. That is until FLO TV, a paid subscription service, licked the technology necessary to deliver true mobile TV programming 24 hours a day/seven days a week of full-length TV shows from major networks, complete with parental controls and a full channel/schedule guide.

The service is compatible with a variety of hardware products, either a FLO TV Personal Television or select mobile phones. There is also the newly announced DFL01 portable DVD player from Audiovox, long a market leader in portable DVD, which features built in FLO TV electronics hardware, so all we need do is add a service subscription and we'll be watching television--real television--just about anywhere, subject to the available coverage area, of course. Still nothing good on? Then just pop in a DVD. The Audiovox DFL01 will go on sale this fall at a price yet to be determined.

Other new Audiovox portable DVD players for 2010 include the fully-featured nine-inch-LCD model DS9106 ($179.99), which adds the ability to capture internet videos recorded from the PC and play them on the "PDVD" thanks to the introduction of the sister company RCA's VideoSnip software. The battery life is now an incredible six hours (almost enough for the entire original Star Wars Trilogy!) while the swivel display assures a multitude of viewing angles.

The D710 ($109.99) has a seven-inch LCD, dual headphone jacks, built-in speakers, and supports playback of DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW & picture CD. The D7104 ($129.99) has all the features of the D710 but an extended battery life of four hours. The D9104 ($159.99) has a nine-inch LCD, four-hour playback, USB Host and VideoSnip functionality. All of the non-FLO TV models will be available in the spring of 2010, and will also come in a so-called "PK" bundle which adds in a carrying case, headrest mounting system and headphones.
