CBS and Paramount Celebrate 50 Years of Star Trek with 30-Disc Blu-ray Set

By Rachel Cericola

How does one celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek? CBS and Paramount seem to be giving it all they've got, Captain.

The studio just announced plans to release the Star Trek Anniversary TV and Movie Collection. On paper, this set seems highly illogical. It's got 30 Blu-rays, with every movie and TV show featuring the original crew. It's even throwing in Star Trek: The Animated Series, which has never been on Blu-ray before.

When it comes to owning everything with the original Enterprise crew, this set should be the final frontier. In addition to the cartoon series, this collection includes Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director's Cut, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Besides all of those movies and TV episodes, as well as 20 hours of previously released bonus content, there's another two hours of new footage in the brand-new multi-part documentary, Star Trek: The Journey to the Silver Screen. Paramount has released chapter titles for this new featurette. Expect to see something on "The New Frontier: Resurrecting Star Trek," "Maiden Voyage: Making Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "The Genesis Effect: Engineering The Wrath of Khan," and "The Dream is Alive: The Continuing Mission."

The entire collection comes with new disc art and collectible packaging, along with a collectible 50th anniversary Starfleet Insignia pin and collectible mini-posters for the first six films, which were all designed by artist Juan Ortiz.

This set isn't available for pre-order just yet, but you should be able to beam the Star Trek Anniversary TV and Movie Collection into your home starting September 6, 2016.
