Boston Acoustics Shows Off M Series Loudspeakers at CEDIA 2012

By Rachel Cericola

Boston Acoustics is currently rocking the floor at the CEDIA Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company certainly has enough speakers to do so, announcing a full suite for its new M Series.

There's a grand total of seven new M Series speakers, which makes this line suitable for 2-channel music systems all the way up to -- well, however many speakers you can squeeze into your listening space.

Three floorstanding models kick off the M Series collection. The largest of the lot is the flagship 3-way M350 (MSRP: $2499 per pair), which has four 5.25-inch woofers and a 4-inch midrange. The slightly smaller M340 has four 4.5-inch woofers and a smaller $1999 (per pair) price tag. The last floorstanding model is the even smaller 2.5-way M250, which has one 5.25-inch midrange/woofer combination and a dedicated 5.25-inch woofer. That has an MSRP of $1499 per pair.

If you want to go even smaller -- for surrounds or any even front speakers -- the M Series has one bookshelf model. The 2-way M25 has one 5.25-inch woofer and is priced at $799 per pair. Rounding out the new lineup is the MCenter center channel (MSRP: $599), which has two 4.5-inch woofers, as well as the satellite MSurround ($748 per pair). There's also the MSubwoofer ($1199), which has a 10-inch woofer, two 8-inch passive radiators, and an internal power amplifier rated at 500 watts (1000 watts of peak output).

All of the M Series speakers have a glossy black finish with black faux leather trim. The bookshelf and floorstanding models include the company's second-gen Extended Wide Bandwidth (EWB) tweeter, which features a large radiating surface, as well as a lightweight high tensile strength fabric diaphragm with a Coupled Dual Concentric Diaphragm (CDCD) design.

The MCenter and MSurround, on the other hand, have the Balanced Mode Radiator (BMR). This perk is a combination of a piston radiator and a bending mode radiator, which is designed to cover the range that's normally handled by a tweeter and a midrange, without a crossover.

Other features on the M350 and M340 include polypropylene midrange drivers with mass loading and a "Quad-Woofer Array," which boasts multiple floor reflection points in a slim form factor.

"Last year's Boston Acoustics set a new standard in premium entry level loudspeakers with our A Series. Now, with the M Series, we are about to establish a new standard in the mid-priced premium segment, adding high-end luxury and sonic refinement for great 2-channel pure audio and large home theater systems," said Mitch Nollman, Boston Acoustics' VP and GM. "With our new M Series, people who have held back on making an investment in truly great sound, either for their home theater or ‘Hi-Fi' system, now have a true high fidelity, high style option that won't break the bank."
