Belkin Play Max Wireless 802.11n Router Streams HD Video and More

By Chris Chiarella

More and more Blu-ray-philes are connecting their players to the internet, to take advantage of BD-Live bonus features, stay current with the latest firmware upgrades, and also exploit the entertainment streaming capabilities (Netflix, VUDU, etc.) that are happily co-existing alongside physical media. Even better, some players can be upgraded to a Wi-Fi connection, some are Wi-Fi-ready right out of the box, and some--like the LG BD570--arrive capable of supporting the state-of-the-art 802.11n Wi-Fi standard for best-possible speed and range.

Of course, this requires a compatible wireless router, and Belkin has just the one. Their brand-new, top-of-the-line Play Max Wireless Router offers not only their best-ever performance, but more features, particularly some of interest to the home theater crowd. Simultaneous dual-band operation, dubbed "Video Max HD," assures steady wireless communication at both 2.4GHz (ideal for data, web traffic and file sharing) and 5GHz (best for streaming audio/video and games). Speed is rated at up to 300Mbps, with house-wide coverage thanks to MIMO technology.

The Play Max is also positioned as the first router with its own built-in software applications. Bit Boost helps to prioritize traffic on the home network, if for example video streaming, gaming and VoIP are going on at the same time. Torrent Genie is especially attractive to a media-hungry world, as it can download large movie or music files even when the computer is powered off. Music Mover can stream music from our computer-based library to the stereo via the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, and Music Labeler automatically identifies and updates the metadata for our tracks. Daily DJ meanwhile fetches personalized playlist recommendations based upon our library and musical tastes. Other apps include auto-backup and "self-healing" of certain potential network issues.

Security settings are preconfigured to have us up and running safely within minutes: We just connect the Play Max Router to the modem, then to AC power, and install the software in the Mac/PC. Four Gigabit LAN ports and two USB ports are provided, with support for external USB hard disk drives (FAT 16/32 and NTFS) and USB printers. The Belkin Play Max Router will be available next month at a suggested retail price of $129.99.
