Barbie is Coming to the Big Screen in Her First Live-Action Movie

By Rachel Cericola

Mattel has been building the Barbie empire for quite a few years. Now, we're about to see our favorite Barbie girl in a whole new way.

The toy company, in conjunction with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Parkes+MacDonald/Image Nation, just announced plans to make a big-screen Barbie movie. However, this isn't like one of Barbie's direct-to-video endeavors or even the big-budget LEGO Movie. After becoming a princess and president, Barbie is doing something completely different; she's actually coming to life!

Yes, Barbie will get her own a live-action comedy, which will be written by Jenny Bicks (The Big C, Rio 2), as well as produced by husband-and-wife team Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.

According to the announcement, Barbie will take on several of the roles that we've seen before. She will also be "utilizing her personal and professional skills to inspire change in the lives of everyone around her."

The live-action Barbie movie marks the second collaboration between Sony Pictures and Mattel. The two are currently working on a film adaptation of Masters of the Universe.

"We've always thought that the Barbie story had great potential, but a universe of possibilities opened up when Jenny, Walter and Laurie brought us their unexpected, clever, and truly funny concept," said Hannah Minghella, Columbia Pictures' president of production. "It captures everything that has made Barbie a classic for generation after generation while also standing on its own, establishing Barbie as a truly original screen character. We're confident that Barbie will delight audiences, no matter where her adventures take her."

Parkes and MacDonald said that this will be a modern-day take on Barbie."While it's an overused word, Barbie truly is a legend, a cultural symbol whose career choices have been as unlimited as her wardrobe," the duo announced in a joint statment. " She is about empowerment, but never at the expense of fun. Our hope is to capture all of these aspects of Barbie in a modern take of the character that can appeal to moviegoers of all ages."

There's no word on which actress will get dibs on Barbie's wardrobe closet, when the live-action film will hit theaters, and whether or not Ken will make an appearance. However, the movie is set to begin production before the end of this year.
