B&W Shrinks Their iPod Dock with Zeppelin Mini

By Rachel Cericola

A new Zeppelin has landed.

Two years after launching the Zeppelin iPod speaker system, Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) has announced a follow-up, the Zeppelin Mini.  The new member of the Zeppelin family uses a lot of the same technology as the full-sized Zeppelin, but in a slightly different design. For one thing, it's a lot smaller. The Mini promises the same killer sound -- just not quite as loud or full as its full-sized big brother. The original Zep cranks out 100 watts to its five speaker drivers. The Mini only has a pair of 3-inch drivers powered by 36 watts of internal amplification.

Still, B&W says that the Zeppelin Mini can make magic out of any iPod or iPhone digital content, by doing the digital-to-analog conversion onboard instead of inside the portable player. In addition to the on-board DAC, the Zeppelin Mini packs two Class D amplifiers, proprietary dynamic equalization, a USB port and an AUX input for use with other sources such as a TV or other portable player.

The Zeppelin Mini will be available in November for $399.95. To start, it will only be available through B&W authorized retailers, such as Apple retail stores and Apple.com,  Amazon.com, Frontgate, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Musicians Friend and Guitar Center.

If you want a little walkthrough, B&W has a nifty product video on their blog.
