Audyssey Rocks Out AirPlay-Enhanced Audio Dock Air Speaker

By Rachel Cericola

We all know about Audyssey for what they do inside some of our favorite home theater components. However, back in October, the company was making noise with its plan for a stand-alone AirPlay-enhanced speaker dock called the Lower East Side Audio Dock Air Speaker.

Now the company is starting to crank them out, but under a new reduced name. The product now goes by the name Audio Dock Air, and it's available at retailers across North America. European models are expected to follow next month.

Of course, the box has Apple AirPlay, which allows users to stream sound from a computer, as well as the iPod touch, iPhone, iPad or any other iTunes-enabled device, right to the Audio Dock Air. However, the real hook is that it uses some of that Audyssey muscle to deliver big sound from a compact package.

"AirPlay speakers stream music in every room seamlessly, but their small size limits their ability to deliver rich sound with deep bass. We developed Audyssey BassXT to overcome this limitation," said Chris Kyriakakis, Audyssey's chief technology officer. "By combining new speaker design methods with advanced audio signal processing we can extend the bass from small speakers to much lower frequencies."

Besides the AirPlay, listeners can expect the unit to come packing passive bass radiators and Audyssey's own BassXT technology. That basically means that you don't need any giant subwoofers hogging up the space or the sound. It also has Audyssey EQ, which is based on the company's MultEQ technology. Both promise room-filling sound from a unit about the size of a router.

Because of the compact size, it's also easy enough to add a few of these around the house. Audyssey says that users can link multiple Audio Dock Air speakers around the house for simultaneous multi-room sound.

The Audio Dock Air is available now with an MSRP of $399.
