Amazon Puts Alexa Capabilities Everywhere via Amazon Tap Speaker and Echo Dot

By Rachel Cericola

At CES 2016 earlier this year, we saw a lot of companies looking to partner up with the Amazon Echo, due to the device's Alexa capabilities. Now, Amazon is about to deliver even more product options that pack in that voice-enabled platform.

The company announced a pair of new Alexa-enabled products, the Amazon Tap and the Amazon Dot.

The Amazon Tap looks almost exactly like the Amazon Echo, except that this Alexa-capable speaker is made specifically for portable use. It features support for both WiFi and Bluetooth and a rechargeable battery, so you can take it almost anywhere. It has dual stereo speakers, Dolby processing, and 360 degrees of omnidirectional sound.

Of course, it also has Alexa. This little perk means that you can just tap the microphone button and ask for specific songs and artists, as well as streaming services like Prime Music, Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and TuneIn. You can also ask Alexa for news reports and even order pizza.

That battery promises up to 9 hours of playback when fully charged. Also, the Amazon Tap boasts the ability to get smarter, since it's adding new features all the time. It also comes with a charging cradle.

Looking to add Alexa into some of the current speakers around your house? That's where the Amazon Dot comes in. This little add-on hooks to your existing speakers or stereo system using an audio cable or via Bluetooth. Once it's connected, it can add hands-free, voice recognition -- as well as those same abilities to call up music, read the news, set alarms, and more. It can even control smart devices around the house, including products from Belkin WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, ecobee, and others.

The Amazon Tap is currently available for pre-order in six colors, priced at $129.99. According to the product page, it should start shipping by March 31, 2016. The Amazon Dot is available now for $89.99, but as an exclusive to Prime members through Alexa Voice Shopping. To buy the Echo Dot, use your existing Amazon Echo or Fire TV and say, "Alexa, order an Echo Dot."
