Amazon Prime Video Streaming and VOD Now Available for Apple iPad

By Rachel Cericola

The Kindle may not be your tablet of choice. That's ok; Amazon forgives you. In fact, they still want to share that wealth of streaming entertainment, so the retailer just announced that Prime Instant Video is now available to iPad users everywhere.

The newly launched Amazon Instant Video app for iPad allows customers to stream, download and enjoy thousands of movies and TV shows instantly on the iPad. Users can also buy or rent content from the Amazon Instant Video library, and enjoy those purchases on the iPad as well.

Amazon Instant Video includes new movies such as 21 Jump Street and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, and the latest episodes of popular TV shows like Breaking Bad and Downton Abbey. The Prime library isn't as large, but provides on-demand access to more than 20,000 titles for a $79 annual fee. Another Prime perk is that members enjoy free two-day shipping on most Amazon purchases.

Other Amazon Instant Video app for iPad features include a queue-like "Your Watchlist" and the "Your Video Library" feature. It also has Whispersync, which allows customers to flip between devices during the streaming process. In other words, you can start a movie on that iPad and continue it on your Amazon-enabled HDTV.

In addition to the iPad, Amazon Instant Video and Prime Instant Video is compatible with platforms and devices including Amazon's Kindle Fire, Sony's PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360, Roku boxes, the Mac and PCs, as well as select TVs and Blu-ray players.

"We want to give customers the convenience of being able to watch all of their movies and TV episodes, wherever they are, on their iPad," said Anthony Bay, Amazon.com vice president for video. "Today we're excited to extend our ‘buy once, enjoy everywhere' approach to iPad, giving customers the chance to enjoy more than 120,000 titles from Amazon Instant Video and more than 20,000 titles from Prime Instant Video anytime, anywhere."
