Martin Logan Encore TF with Grill Removed
MartinLogan's Encore TF speaker is on sale via a BPBS exclusive promotion for $274 each.
If you're not into high end audio or home theater, you may never have heard of MartinLogan.  They're an American speaker company, based in Lawrence, Kansas that makes some of the finest loudspeakers in the world... but at a price.  Their electrostatic and ATF (Advanced Thin Film) designs grace the homes (and estates... and yachts) of well-to-do audiophiles around the world.

Big Picture Big Sound has partnered with authorized MartinLogan dealer, OneCall to offer MartinLogan's Encore TF LCR speaker not for the list price of $499 each, nor even the clearance price of $299 each but via a special exclusive deal, you can save an additional $25 per speaker.  Now you can take home these advanced thin film driver speakers for just $274 each including free shipping (update: reduced to $199).  That's $995 for five channels or $1393 for a full 7 channel system.

UPDATE (1/31/10): OneCall has now reduced the price to an unbelievable $199 each and Amazon has also put these speakers on clearance for $199.  Follow this link for the Encore TF on Amazon (good while supplies last):

MartinLogan Encore TF
With wall-mount brackets and stands that allow the Encore to be mounted horizontally or vertically, the Encore TF is ideal for a 5.1 or 7.1-channel home theater system.

The Encore TF was originally designed as a center channel speaker as an aesthetic and sonic match to MartinLogan's far more expensive electrostatic speakers, and its excellent reproduction of dialog and other sounds in the critical midrange registers makes it exceptionally well suited for that task.  However, its high 92 dB efficiency, 100 Watts power handling and outstanding transparency, as well as flexible horizontal or vertical placement options make it a great choice for front and surround speakers for a full 5.1 or 7.1 channel home theater rig.  Many home theater experts recommend using identical speakers for all channels in order to get consistent frequency response and imaging characteristics all around the room and the Encore is a perfect choice for this kind of system.

Encore TF's Advanced Thin Film driver
The Encore's ATF (Advanced Thin Film) transducer is where the magic happens.
The key to the Encore's success is its Advanced Thin Film (ATF) driver.  Based on RADIA planar technology, the Encore's ATF driver approaches the clarity and transparency of MartinLogan's electrostatic panels but at a much smaller cabinet size and a much more affordable price.  Hand-built using audiophile-grade polypropylene capacitors and air-core coils, the Encore's crossover employs MartinLogan's proprietary Vojtko topology for low distortion and seamless driver integration.  This is a true taste of high end luxury sound at bargain basement pricing.

Keep in mind that the Encore is a fairly compact speaker (6 x 24 x 4.7 inches), which means it cannot produce deep bass (its rated frequency response is 70-20,000 Hz +/- 3 dB). For this reason, we'd recommend mating it with one or two subwoofers, depending on your room dimensions and layout.  Any high quality powered subwoofer with clean tight bass reproduction will do, but MartinLogan's subwoofers are a particularly good match due to their fast transient response and excellent dynamics.  OneCall has MartinLogan's Abyss subwoofer on sale at 45% below list ($599).  This is a 300 Watt beast with a 12" driver that can go all the way down to 23 Hz.  It makes an excellent match for the Encore speakers.
