CES: Sharp Unveils New 108-inch Aquos LCD HDTV

By Chris Boylan

At CES in Las Vegas today, Sharp unveiled a fully functional sample of their upcoming Aquos brand LCD flat panel HDTV. The size? A mere 108 inches, measured diagonally, beating out Panasonic's previous record holder, a 103-inch plasma model.

Panasonic has already commercialized their gargantuan plasma panel, selling it in small quantities for an MSRP of $69,999. Sharp announced that it also plans to commercialize this 108-inch Aquos model, but did not have any specifics on pricing or availability yet. In terms of details, all we know at this point is that the set features a 1920X1080 (1080p) panel, and is being manufactured at the new Kameyama II plant in Japan along with their other new large screen models.

In addition to several newly announced models in their consumer Aquos line, Sharp will be exhibiting several prototype technology "statement pieces" at CES including a larger 65-inch version of the "1,000,000:1" contrast ratio LCD TV we saw last year, a 4K x 2K super high-res LCD panel and a unique triple view LCD screen which shows viewers up to three different, discrete images depending on their angle of view.
