Why Does My PS3 Put Out 480P Resolution via HDMI/DVI?

By Chris Boylan

Question:

Dear Expert,

I have an older HDTV (Mitsubishi WS-65713) that has a DVI input and will accept 1080i but I cant get anything over 480p from my Sony PS3 (the TV will not accept 720p). Can I get a better picture from this TV with the PS3?

I have it hooked up like my XBOX 360 which does output it to 1080i on the same TV.

What gives???

-David

Answer:

Hello, David,

There are a couple of things that could be going on. First I assume you're using an HDMI to DVI-D adapter to hook up the player to the TV since the PS3 does not have a DVI output. Also, double-check the HDMI settings in your PS3's menu to make sure you have set the HDMI output resolution to 1080i. I'm assuming you have done this, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Considering the age of the television, it's possible that your set's DVI input is not HDCP-compliant (it's a security thing). If it isn't then you may have trouble getting a signal from the PS3 above 480p resolution via the HDMI output.

You should try hooking up the PS3 via component video instead (3-conductor RGB cable), plus stereo audio. This should allow you to view Blu-ray Disc movies and games at 1080i, but it will automatically drop the resolution to 480p when viewing regular DVDs.

In order to get DVD upconversion to work above 480p resolution you must have an HDCP-compliant HDMI or DVI input on your TV.

Regards,

-Chris
