iHome Ships AirPlay-enhanced iW1 Rechargeable Speaker System

By Rachel Cericola

Some of these stand-alone, tabletop speaker options are starting to blend together. However, iHome is really making its newly announced iW1 Wireless Rechargeable Speaker System with AirPlay a standout.

Most of what makes this audio option something special can be found in the product's lengthy title. First of all, the iW1 features AirPlay support. That basically means that you can stream your entire iTunes library from any computer or the iPad, iPhone and/or iPod touch to anywhere you want to place this little speaker.

Yes, the speaker is portable. It features built-in Wi-Fi support, so it can stream all of that music from anywhere within your wireless network's reach. It's also compatible with all of those Apple-branded portables via iHome's free iHome Connect app.

One other key feature found in the product name is that the iW1 is rechargeable. This is a real bonus and makes the unit truly portable. Besides that rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the iW1 features four active speakers, Bongiovi Acoustics Digital Power Station (DPS) technology, and its own remote control.

"We're very excited with the final result of the iW1 and all it offers from both a design and feature standpoint," said Ezra S. Ashkenazi, iHome's president. "The portability, premium sound and proprietary app that ensures easy set-up, are all delivered at an affordable price, giving owners a perfect audio solution for their home."

To use the AirPlay features, you need iTunes 10.1 or later, as well as an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with iOS 4.2 or later. If you have all of those things, all you need is the iW1. That's available now, with an MSRP of $299.
