Yahama Builds Subwoofer into Home Theater Receiver for YHT-S401 Soundbar

By Rachel Cericola

The soundbar category has exploded over the past few years. Some people don't have the space, money or patience for a bigger speaker setup. Whatever the reason, it's pretty obvious that a lot of people no longer want to accept what's cranking out of the TV speakers as a viable audio option. We can certainly understand (and endorse) that.

Typically, the soundbar solution comes as either a stand-alone product or paired with its own matching subwoofer, but it tends to be fairly limited in its number of inputs and in overall ergnomics. Well, Yamaha apparently wants to offer something a little different.

Yamaha's YHT-S401 Front Virtual Surround System does feature two components. However, instead of just adding in the old subwoofer, this new option includes its own 100-watt powered subwoofer which includes an integrated reciver with switching for up to three components. Like most compact subwoofers, this unit can be placed pretty easily since it's designed to be used horizontally or vertically.

Of course, the main attraction of this package is the slim soundbar, which boasts 50-watt speakers at each end, with a third 50-watt center channel positioned right in the middle.

Using the company's own Air Surround Xtreme technology, this two-piece setup promises virtual 7.1 surround sound. It also has six surround modes, including Movie, Music, Sports, Game, TV Program and the Standard catchall.

Featuring three HDMI inputs, the YHT-S401 is compatible with 1080p sources, as well as HD, 3D and ARC (Audio Return Channel). It also has a headphone jack if you're looking to hoard the experience, or just have a late-night movie marathon.

Other features include Yamaha's own Music Enhancer technology, Clear Voice, a built-in FM tuner and a digital USB connection for hooking up your iPod, iPhone or iPad.

"Many of our customers desire the full multi speaker, multichannel sound experience but simply don't have the room to accommodate the extra speakers and subwoofer, and the YHT-S401 more than answers this call," said Tom Sumner, Yamaha's president. "Our system offers simple, unique style in a high performance package that affords many placement options. It's ideal for a small, multi-use family room where everyone wants to get the most out of movies, music, games and other activities."

Available in a mirror black finish, the YHT-S401 comes with a remote and has an adjustable, rotating stand. Of course, you can also put it up on the wall as a complement to your flat-screen HDTV.

The YHT-S401 is available now with an MSRP of $699.95.
