Want to Save on Electricity? Monster Has Power Products - and an App - for That

By Chris Chiarella

Monster continues to provide not only a wide variety of innovative power conditioning and protection products, but an increasing assortment of "green" power solutions that might help consumers save precious energy dollars. To that end, the company has introduced several advanced power management products that work with the revolutionary new Monster Power Control App. It's designed to interact with the company's new PRT family of PowerCenters, including the PRT 100M ($59.95), PRT 100MC ($69.95) and PRT 300MC ($119.95). All three of these PowerCenter products, expected in March, operate in harmony with Monster's Network Communication Gateway GTW 100 ($59.95) that connects to a home network router, thereby enabling the aforementioned Power Control App.

A convenient all-in-one Monster PRT 300 MC Kit ($149.95) features both the PRT300MC and the GTW 100, plus an FCC-approved case. It will allow consumers to add more PowerCenters that can all be accessed using the elegant Power Control user interface. The Power Control App allows smartphone/tablet users (iOS as well as Android) an easy way to monitor and manage the power consumption of practically electronic device, anytime and from anywhere, via the internet.

Created by People Power, the Monster Power App provides pertinent home system data with clear, colorful, accurate graphics that also allow us to track the cost of our power usage over time. The app can schedule control of devices, helping us to switch off energy "vampires" that draw significant power 24/7 while in standby mode, particularly home theater components. We can then easily turn it all off at night and back on the next morning, or whenever we say.

People Power CEO and Founder Gene Wang was on-hand at Monster's CES press conference to give us a live demonstration. A bank of lamps was plugged into AC power and turned on, and using nothing but a wireless, internet-connected iPad, he was able to locate the appropriate outlet and shut them off in seconds, without ever touching them.

The PRT 100M and the PowerProtect 100MC each provide users with a single heavy-duty outlet that has 540 joules of fireproof protection, with a $200,000 connected equipment warranty. We can plug any Monster PowerCenter into the PRT 100M and then monitor all the energy activity from the home theater. The PRT 300MC provides even more energy management possibilities, with three heavy duty outlets, 1080 joules of protection and a $300,000 warranty. It enables monitoring of three home theater components at the same time and switching one of the outlets on or off whenever necessary.
