Vuzix iWear AV310 Widescreen: The First-Ever 16:9 Personal Video Eyewear

By Chris Chiarella

Vuzix iWear has taken a another major step toward simulating the home theater experience on-the-go, with the introduction of their AV310 Widescreen Personal Video Eyewear ($249.95). Competing products offer the virtual experience of "watching a 52-inch display from nine feet away," but only at the oldfangled 4:3 aspect ratio. The AV310 goes wide, to the de facto home theater standard of 16:9, a significant boon to movie watching.

A "Made for iPod" device, the AV310 Widescreen is certainly not exclusive, ready to work with any NTSC/PAL media player offering a composite video connection via the included adapter cables, even cellphones with video output. A single AA battery is the only power supply necessary for the goggles, good for up to four hours of viewing (11 hours if we go lithium), and the visor itself weighs less than four ounces, for long-term comfort. The included earbuds, while comfortable, can also be easily removed and swapped out for a favorite pair of 'phones. This modular design also accommodates eyeglass wearers like me, with flexible, removable eyepieces to create the extra space needed. We can also adjust the focus for each eye independently.

The Vuzix iWear AV310 video goggles mirror the widescreen aspect ratio supported by the iPod touch (sold separately).

Inside, dual tiny, high-resolution LCDs manufactured by Kopin Corporation handle the video display duties, and are 3D-capable. Vuzix' trademarked AccuTilt viewer offers up to 15 degrees of adjustment to achieve the perfect angle. To add further convenience, control settings for the AV310 Widescreen are displayed right on the screen.
