Value Electronics to Host 7th Annual HDTV Shoot-Out

By Rachel Cericola

Reach for the sky! We love an old-fashioned shoot-out as much as the next Western fan. However, we love it even more when it's a shoot-out between consumer electronics brands. There probably won't be any blood, but there may be a few tears when Value Electronics hosts its 7th Annual Flat-Panel HDTV Shoot-Out next month.

The Westchester County, NY-based retailer has contracted with a charter member of the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) for the event, which will be held on Saturday, September 17, at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 18, at 1:00 p.m. at the Value Electronics retail store in Scarsdale, NY.

UPDATE: The event has been re-scheduled to October 8th (Saturday) and October 9th (Sunday).

The panel will include Kevin Miller of ISFTV and TweakTV, along with expert calibrators D-Nice and Ed Johnson. The evaluation process will include contrast ratio, peak brightness, black level, color accuracy, color saturation, motion resolution and energy efficiency. A slew of video engineers will also be on hand to assist in evaluating flat-panel HDTVs from Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Sony, and the new Elite brand. The process will use the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers' (SMPTE) standards on LED and plasma models ranging from 55 to 65 inches.

If you're in the area, you can try to snag one of the event's 30 available seats by registering on the Value Electronics website. If you make it to the Saturday evening event, then look for our Editor in Chief, Chris Boylan who will be in attendance that evening.  Can't be in Scarsdale for the big days? Catch it online. Value Electronics plans to stream the day's events live, and archive them for later viewing.

"Our Shoot-out has proven to be a 'must attend' event among true HD enthusiasts and industry leaders each year, featuring a demonstration of how flat screen HDTVs perform as they come out of the box in their standard mode, and then again when they are professionally calibrated to ISF standards," says Robert Zohn, founder and president of Value Electronics. "Value Electronics is the only company to conduct an independent test of HD panels simultaneously on all leading brands."
