Titanic Comes to Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D this September, Packed with Special Features

By Rachel Cericola

Our hearts will go on -- and so will the special features promised in the upcoming Blu-ray release of Titanic. Paramount Home Media Distribution and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment just announced plans to release the $2 billion box office hit on Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on September 10, 2012.

(Editor's note: Paramount had original stated that the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D relase of Titanic would be September 14. It has since been changed to September 10, 2012.)

This will be the first time that James Cameron's blockbuster will be available in high-def, let alone in the Blu-ray 3D format. Both sets will come packing a total of four discs, which includes a Digital Copy of the movie and more than 2.5 hours of footage never-before-released on disc. However, both sets are a little different.

The 4-disc Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack (MSRP: $44.99) includes two Blu-ray 3D discs for the actual movie. The third disc is a 2D Blu-ray, with the movie and three different commentaries. One will be James Cameron alone, one features the cast and crew, and the final commentary will have historians Don Lynch and Ken Marschall sitting in. The final Blu-ray in the set is all special features, including two new documentaries, "Reflections on Titanic" and "Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron."

Other extras include 30 deleted scenes, Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes, a "Construction Timelapse," a Cameron-narrated "Deep Dive Presentation," and the crew video "$200,000,001: A Ship's Odyssey." The disc will also have trailers, TV spots, over 2,000 photos, MTV and Saturday Night Live skits, storyboards, a piece of special effects, and of course, Celine Dion's music video for "My Heart Will Go On."

If you don't have a 3D setup, there will also be a 4-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack (MSRP: $39.99). One Blu-ray disc will have the movie and a second Blu-ray will have the same special features listed above. The rest of the set will have the movie running across two standard-def DVDs.

The Blu-ray will include 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as the option for Dolby Digital 2.0 in English, Dolby Digital 5.1 in French of Spanish, and an English Audio Description track. English, French and Spanish subtitles will also be available.

"Blu-ray extends Titanic's immersive 3D theatrical experience into audiences' homes, where their living room becomes the backdrop for big spectacular environments and intense action, as well as profoundly intimate human moments, allowing generations of fans -- new and old -- to truly become part of the movie like never before," Cameron said in a statement.

Winner of 11 Academy Awards, Titanic is the romantic story of two star-crossed lovers set against the backdrop of the legendary and ill-fated maiden voyage of the "ship of dreams." It stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
