The League: The Complete Season One Blu-ray Review

The Film

What's the equivalent of Sex and the City for dudes? Most dudes would probably scoff at such a premise. However, most dudes probably haven't seen The League.

FX timed The League: The Complete Season One with the premiere of the show's second season. Two episodes into season two, the show shouldn't be all that hard to follow. First of all, the freshman season consists of only six episodes. Secondly, it's not quite as cerebral as FX's other shows, such as Rescue Me and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. It's also not as good.

The League has plenty of moments though, which are certainly not for the easily offended. The show follows the rude, crude adventures of five high-school friends as they tackle topics such as feces, smoking pubic hair, and how to work out with porn. Of course, it has its tender moments too, but those are few and far between -- and mostly about football.

For the most part, The League sounds more like a locker room than a bunch of aging buddies. However, that's what makes it entertaining. It's real, and if you don't find a bit of dirty humor to be funny, don't bet on The League.

The Picture

For a little known show, this 1.78:1 transfer has a remarkably nice image. There are plenty of shots of gorgeous cityscapes and other scenery. Some of that, such as the prison hallways, are really textured. Overall, it has a decent amount of detail and a bright color palette. Even the purple mane of Taco's homemade unicorn bong has really nice color and texture to it!

The Sound

The dialogue sounds great, but there's very little else for this DTS-HD Master Audio track to do here. Most of the audio sticks towards the front, except when the theme belts out -- and not in a good way.

The Extras

For a season that spawned only six episodes, The League certainly has a lot of extras. Every episode offers up an extended version, filled with some deleted scenes. If you watch "Alt Nation," you'll see that a lot of the show relies on improvisation. Hence, they've got a lot of extra material lying around. Many of the other shorts are inspired from specific episodes, with the funniest being "Mr. McGibblets Fun House and Dojo" as well as "Andre: Dress With Style, Win With Style."

Another little nugget is that FX has thrown in the pilot for Archer, FX's animated series, which just wrapped its first season in March.

Final Thoughts

Don't let the title scare you. The League is an unconventional sitcom with a few laughs -- and none have anything to do with football. While it's true that you don't have to be a jersey-wearing face-painter to appreciate the show, you probably don't want to bet the farm on this one, either. FX has so many quality shows, and this certainly isn't the best one. It's probably best served as a rental.
