The Abbott and Costello Show: The Complete Series - Collector's Edition on DVD (Finally!) 3/30/10

We don't usually write about DVDs much anymore, but we decided to make an exception in honor of one the most beloved TV series ever, about to become available in a long-awaited complete series set. Arriving on March 30 from E1 Entertainment, The Abbott and Costello Show: The Complete Series - Collector's Edition brings together all 52 episodes of the half-hour sitcom starring one of the most enduring duos in the history of comedy itself, epitomizing the quality of "the golden age of television."

With production values on a par with feature films of the era, The Abbott and Costello Show would bring classic skits and fresh material alike to the largest audience of their long career, finding millions of new fans across both the initial run and decades of syndication. The show, which had previously been released scattershot with inferior picture and sound, has been restored and remastered for this new nine-disc boxed set, and enhanced with a variety of never-before-released bonus material.

The 1978 TV special "Hey Abbott!" boasts reminiscences from some of comedy's greatest legends, while personal home movies from the Lou Costello family archive provide a private glimpse behind the scenes. In addition, the restored 1948 short film "10,000 Kids and a Cop," which documents the philanthropic work of the Lou Costello Jr. Youth Foundation, and interviews with daughters Chris and Paddy Costello are highlighted. The package also includes a 44-page book filled with photos, essays and a complete episode guide, as well as a set of black-and-white postcards reproduced from vintage photographs.

Stars Bud Abbott and Lou Costello somehow managed to transport their unique characters and impeccable timing intact from the live stage to radio to the movies and ultimately to the small screen. I personally remember the weekday reruns on Channel 11 here in the Tri-State area, and more famous fans include the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, who cites The Abbott and Costello Show as a major professional inspiration. With timeless bits such as "Who's on First?" and many more, this set is a bargain at the $59.98 asking price.
