THX Will Certify Your Eyes for 3D TV

By Rachel Cericola

Next week, history will be made, in both technology and optometry. On October 6, 2011, THX will join forces with Pacific University's College of Optometry to open the world's first 3D Performance Eye Clinic.

If you're worried about how 3D affects your peepers, or are having trouble seeing what all the fuss is about on the new 3D TVs, consider booking yourself a ticket to the clinic, which is located in Beaverton, Oregon. However, this isn't your ordinary clinic. Inside, there's a full 3D theater, which features a slew of THX-certified equipment. Unlike your home theater, this one has the benefits of controlled lighting, optimized viewing angles and freedom from visual distractions.

It also has about $40,000 worth of THX-certified equipment, including LG's 50-inch 50PZ950 1080p 3D plasma display, JVC's DLA-RS50U 3D projector, Stewart Filmscreen's 90-inch StudioTek 130 automated projection screen, Atlantic Technology's System 4200 7.1-channel speaker system, Onkyo's TX-NR1009 7.1 receiver and Onkyo's BD-SP809 Blu-ray player. Chief also lent the LTAU to mount the flat panel and the RPMAU serves as the video projector mount. The whole thing is controlled via Universal Remote Control's MX-450 fully programmed RF remote.

Insider the theater, the staff will measure binocular vision performance while viewing 3D content. Those results will then be used to diagnose and treat eye coordination problems affecting 3D vision.

The work done at this location will also help the entertainment, CE industries and beyond to better understand 3D health-related issues, as well as develop better products and content.

The grand opening of Pacific University's 3D Vision Performance Eye Clinic will be Tuesday, October 6, 2011. The event will include reps from the American Optometric Association (AOA), Nike and Intel. Beaverton Mayor Denny Doyle, Pacific University President Lesley Hallick, and Rick Dean, THX Ltd.'s senior VP and 3D@Home Consortium chair, will also be on hand to make remarks.

If you're in the area, the Pacific EyeClinic Beaverton is located at The Round at Beaverton Central at 12600 SW Crescent Street in Suite 130. The festivities will kick off at 2:30 p.m.
