Sony Becomes Second Studio to Announce 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Titles

By Rachel Cericola

We still don't have a 4K Blu-ray player available for purchase, but we do have information on why you'll want to get one. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) just announced the first film titles that the studio is planning for the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.

SPHE will make The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Salt, Hancock, Chappie, Pineapple Express, and The Smurfs 2 its first 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases. The studio is also planning to follow up those titles with additional movies and even TV shows.

The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format boasts four times the resolution of HD, as well as high dynamic range (HDR). The end result is a lifelike viewing experience with bright colors, a better contrast, and more detail than we've ever seen before. Sony also says that these discs will include support for immersive audio formats, but there's no word on what titles will get which formats.

Sony currently has a catalog of 4K content available. The studio had restored each title from the original film elements. That lineup includes Fury, Captain Phillips, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Men In Black, Ghostbusters, The Fifth Element, Bad Boys, The Da Vinci Code, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Leon: The Professional, Lawrence Of Arabia, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Guns of Navarone, Taxi Driver, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and many others. Currently, there's no word on when or if these titles will be released on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.

"By some estimates, consumers will own over 100 million Ultra HD television sets by 2019. Sony Pictures' 4K Ultra HD Discs will deliver consumers the ultimate home theater experience, with stunning picture and sound quality," said Man Jit Singh, SPHE's president. "Ten years ago this month, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment authored the world's first feature film on Blu-ray Disc, and we continue to bring consumers the most innovative, immersive home entertainment experiences available."

Back in September, Twentieth Century Fox was the first studio to announce a 4K Blu-ray lineup. The studio's first 4K releases will include Exodus: Gods and Kings, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Fantastic Four, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Life of Pi, The Maze Runner, and Wild. All 4K Blu-ray titles are expected sometime in early 2016.
