Samsung Claims 60 Percent of the 3D TV Market

By Rachel Cericola

Last week, LG was talking up the power of passive 3D technology. However, it seems that active 3D TV still rules the roost, as far as sales are concerned -- and Samsung has the numbers to prove it.

According to new data by market research firm The NPD Group, Samsung currently holds 61 percent of the 3D TV market. The numbers account for both LED and plasma, sold between May 22 and June 18, 2011.

While that may seem like a small window -- and it is -- the company is also staking claim to over 50 percent of the unit and dollar market share for April and May 2011. The numbers don't lie, even though they don't really mention how many of the units sold are being used to actively view 3D content. Samsung certainly makes that a lot easier than it used to be though. Back in April, the company announced plans top to drop prices on all of their active 3D glasses, as well as give two free pairs (model SSG-3100GB) to anyone buying a qualifying 2011 Samsung 3D TV.

"Clearly consumers are voting with their wallets and choosing the TV that provides a superior 3D experience," said John Revie, Samsung's senior VP of home entertainment. "Samsung 3D TVs can deliver Full HD 3D, but a TV isn't just about 3D. We also are leaders in design with our gorgeous TVs, and leaders in connected TV with our hugely popular Samsung Apps platform. Consumers don't need to compromise when they choose a Samsung TV."

The timing of the announcement could be coincidental. However, Samsung seems to be ribbing LG's findings, saying that their own active 3D technology offers up "a no-compromise 3D experience" with "up to double the resolution" of other approaches to 3D. Studio heads seem to appreciate that kind of performance as well.

"Quality is what matters when it comes to 3D," said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. "DreamWorks Animation has always been dedicated to creating movies of the highest quality and, since 2009, we have been the only studio to exclusively produce films in 3D," Katzenberg continued. "So, it is tremendously important to us that 3D in the home must also be of the highest quality. Samsung's active 3D TVs offer the best in-home 3D viewing experience. Their full-resolution 3D TVs deliver to the home the same immersive 3D experience that our filmmakers intended for our audiences."
