Roku Adds VUDU Channel for Enhanced HD TV and Movie Streaming

By Rachel Cericola

Roku is adding a few extra streaming options -- ok, 100,000 of them. The company just announced plans to add a VUDU channel to its already lengthy lineup.

So that little box will now have access to thousands upon thousands of movies and TV shows, on-demand and without the need for any type of monthly subscription.

Roku is making the VUDU service available on all Roku 2, Roku HD (model 2500) and Roku LT streaming players. It will also be part of the package when the Roku Streaming Stick starts shipping in October.

As an added incentive, VUDU will offer a $5.99 video credit when you link your Roku player.

In case you haven't been keeping tabs on all of the streaming services currently available, VUDU is the one that's owned by Walmart. There's no subscription fee. Instead, it offers a pay-per-view option, with many of the selections available in 1080p HD with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. According to VUDU, many new selections are available the same day they are released on DVD or Blu-ray.

The Roku 2 XS can stream up to 1080p and features an enhanced remote with motion control.

"We're committed to offering customers access to their favorite movies and TV shows at the highest possible streaming quality wherever they choose to watch them," said Prasanna Ganesan, general manager and CEO of VUDU. "Our launch on Roku today allows us to offer our entire catalog on the most popular streaming player on the market."

At last peek, Roku was offering more than 600 channels of entertainment. That's a lot for such a tiny box! Besides VUDU, other popular selections include Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, Amazon Instant Video, Crackle, HBO Go, Facebook, and much more.

Currently, there are four Roku boxes available, ranging from the $49.99 Roku LT to the $99.99 Roku 2 XS. The Roku Streaming Stick will put the platform into an even smaller product that's the size of a USB thumb drive. That product is expected to ship in October, with an MSRP of $99.99.
