Panasonic's iPod-Ready HDTVs Bring Your Music and Movies to the Big(ger) Screen

By Chris Boylan

At a press event in New York City this week, Panasonic was showing off their new iPod-ready X1 series of LCD HDTVs. These entry-level 720p models include an iPod docking station that allows you to select, control and view or listen to your media files from the comfort of your couch, using the TV's included remote control.

The 26-inch TC-L26X1, 32-inch TC-L32X1 and 37-inch TC-L37X1 are all "Made for iPod" certified, for compatibility with virtually all iPod models except the Shuffle with its non-standard pin configuration. And though the TVs are not officially iPhone-certified, Panasonic reps said that iPhones work fine when set to "airplane mode" which disables in internal phone and radio features while maintaining access to all of your media files.  You can even view photos stored on your iPod while listening to music also stored on your iPod so you can create a custom slideshow scored with your own personal musical selections as the soundtrack.

The X1 series LCD TVs' integrated iPod menu allows you to browse your music and videos up on the big screen. Shown here in a preview mode, movies and photos can be viewed in full screen mode at the touch of a button.

Product managers from Japan and the US described the reaction of the iPod certification team when they were evaluating the TV's integrated iPod user interface… "Very nice!" Is it better than AppleTV? That is subject to discussion, but the nice thing about Panasonic's dock is that it's included in the TVs' fairly low purchase prices. Ideal for a dorm room or bedroom, the X1 series of VIERA LCD HDTVs is available now, ranging from $549 to $749 MSRP, but with street prices much lower.
