Panasonic Takes 3D HDTV On Tour

By Rachel Cericola

Panasonic has got their motor running -- and you might want to head out to the highway to check out this road show. The company has just launched a nationwide truck tour designed to give the public a peek at Panasonic's Full HD 3D Home Theater System.

First shown at last year's CEATEC show in Japan, and again at January's Consumer Electronics Show, the system uses plasma and a prototype Blu-ray player to deliver 1080p 3D entertainment. That sounds nice, doesn't it? Even better, Panasonic will be displaying the technology using three custom-built, expandable tractor-trailers.

"Panasonic's Full HD 3D represents the next stage of audio-visual technologies for the home beyond High Definition," said Eisuke Tsuyuzaki, Panasonic's CTO. "Full HD 3D enables virtually the same quality and immersive experience as in 3D theaters. We also hope through our 3D TV truck tour to assure consumers that Panasonic is working diligently with fellow consumer electronics leaders and Hollywood to create a single open Full HD 3D TV standard."

Panasonic says they've also formed a partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Lightstorm Entertainment to promote James Cameron’s new live-action 3D flick, Avatar. Panasonic provided some of that technology, so they will help pump up the marketing campaign. The movie hits screens nationwide on December 18, 2009.

That should get a wide release. However, the 3D caravan won’t be blowing through streets like the ice cream man. Instead, they are heading out to corporate headquarters of retailers, tradeshows, industry conferences, universities and athletic events. They expect to bring in about 500,000 people between now and March 2010.

A complete truck tour schedule should be available soon. If you happen to be in Atlanta this week, one of the trucks will be featured inside Panasonic's booth at CEDIA Expo 2009.
