3D TV: Panasonic and CBS Team for US Open Tennis in 3D

By Rachel Cericola

It looks like tennis will be the next sport to come at you in 3D.

Yesterday, Panasonic made the announcement that the 2010 US Open will be shown in 3D on CBS. The broadcast is part of a three-year agreement between the network and Panasonic. As part of the deal, Panasonic will also become an official sponsor of the event.

The 3D matches will be broadcast live from August 30 through September 12, 2010. The 3D will be made available through DIRECTV's n3D, which is "powered by Panasonic." Aside from the technology, the 3D portion will differ by having six camera rigs, a 3D-dedicated CBS Sports broadcast team, and a separate production team.

"CBS Sports is looking forward to using this groundbreaking technology during our coverage of the U.S. Open Tennis Championships," said Harold Bryant, VP of production for CBS Sports. "With the court-level camera positions that will make viewers feel like they are right on the court, and the resonant sounds of the game and the spectators, tennis will be a spectacular sport to see in 3D."

Panasonic also plans to have 3D viewing galleries on-site at the US Open -- in case the live action isn't lifelike enough (or you have bad seats). If you're planning to go, look for a 3D Panasonic Showcase in the former International Tennis Hall of Fame Gallery and in the SmashZone area.

"Panasonic is proud to support the US Open, on site and in homes throughout the country, by bringing live match action to tennis fans in immersive 3D," said Joseph M. Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Panasonic Corporation of North America. "Panasonic consumer and professional 3D displays will show the Arthur Ashe Stadium matches to spectators on site in Flushing Meadows, viewers nationwide can see them via DirecTV's exclusive 3D channel, 'n|3D powered by Panasonic', and our professional 3D camcorder will be used to shoot interviews and other footage in 3D for CBS's production."

Panasonic and DIRECTV also plan to show semifinal and live matches in 3D in a variety of national retail outlets, most notably at Best Buy. This will be part the Consumer Electronics Association's National 3D Demo Days, which will run from September 10 through 12.
