Panasonic Debuts 4K OLED TV at IFA 2015

By Rachel Cericola

It looks like there's another player in the OLED TV game. Panasonic just made a very big debut at IFA 2015 in Berlin. Get ready to meet the 65-inch TX-65CZ950 Curved 4K OLED TV.

As part of the company's premium 4K Pro range, the 65-incher has a curved screen that can deliver eye-popping 4K images using OLED technology. The big hook on OLED is that it has self-lighting pixels that can turn on and off automatically, creating brighter colors and deeper black levels.

This announcement isn't just a big deal because this is Panasonic's first-ever 4K OLED TV. (Well, that is pretty huge.) It's also very exciting because this set has some interesting Panasonic picture processing -- and we've seen what the company has done with plasma. (And we still miss it!)

"The exciting thing about OLED TVs is that every individual organic pixel in their screens can create its own individual light and colour output. This means an OLED screen can produce light and colour with a degree of accuracy and dynamism just not possible on conventional TVs," the company said in a statement. "In fact, OLED screens can achieve even deeper blacks than Panasonic's legendary plasma TVs, while also avoiding the picture noise associated with plasma technology."

For this set specifically, Panasonic is including a modified version of the 4K Studio Master Processor. The company actually collaborated with Hollywood filmmakers, including colorist Mike Sowa (Oblivion, Insurgent), to fine-tune the picture. Sowa even helped to design the set's True Cinema picture preset. Other image perks include Absolute Black for better black levels, 4K THX certification, and HDR (high dynamic range) support.

"Panasonic is proving their commitment to excellence by engineering their newest 4K Pro TV to satisfy my professional standard of zero compromise," said Sowa. "My world of visual storytelling is based around color accuracy and the need for a display that compliments the creative vision. Panasonic has engineered their newest 4K Pro OLED TV to a standard that I would only expect in professional displays."

Panasonic has yet to announce pricing for the TX-65CZ950 or any information on when it will be available in the U.S. However, our friends over at HD Guru say that the set will start shipping to European customers sometime in October.
