Big Picture Big Sound

Mitsubishi Unveils Premium LCD HDTVs and 3D-Ready 82-inch DLP HDTV

By Rachel Cericola

Mitsubishi showed off its 2009 TV line this week, and things sure look (and sound) pretty.

First up is the new Unisen. What makes this TV line so special, aside from its super-slim package is that each unit in the three new Unisen series will pack a 16-speaker Dolby Digital 5.1 channel surround system.

Does that math seem right? Actually yes. Mitsubishi says that each of those speakers boasts perfectly balanced audio waves to produce a more immersive surround experience.  Unlike most "virtual surround" technologies, Mitsubishi's Unisen Immersive Sound technology uses precise time delays and beaming to bounce surround channel information off your side walls so sound really comes from behind you without the need for rear speakers.  You'll still need your Blu-ray player, but this design means you should be able to cut down on some of the clutter of bulky speaker cabinets and wires.

Another nifty feature is that any user can enter room dimensions to get the best possible sound for that space. You can even adjust direction, location, and sound levels for each of the five surround channels. Also, the output level for the subwoofer is controllable via remote.
