Miss March on Blu-ray Disc Review

By Chris Chiarella

The Movie

The stars of Miss March are also the writer/directors, and we quickly get the sense that they think they're much funnier and more talented than they really are, apparently mistaking "crass" for "hysterical" as they have. Bringing little innovation to the sex-comedy genre, they instead bombard unwitting viewers with recurring poop gags, graphic descriptions of carnal acts, and other "jokes" so broad and crude that even the rare subtly amusing bit is lost in the crush. I'm no prude, I just prefer my dirty jokes to be, y'know, funny.

Let's see if I can sort this out... a virginal couple finally decides to go all the way on prom night, but the uptight guy winds up in a coma before he can close the deal. Four years later he wakes up alone, to find the love of his life is now a total hottie in the pages of Playboy, so his wacky best bud kidnaps him for a cross-country road trip to the Playboy Mansion for a reunion. If nudity's your bag by the way, you might be surprised that even the three-and-a-half-minute longer "Fully Exposed Unrated Cut" doesn't offer much, considering that the movie is named for a Playboy model.

The Picture

The 1.85:1 high-def image nicely captures the tiny flecks of body glitter twinkling across a character's skin (although body glitter on the virgin girlfriend getting ready for bed, alone, on a school night makes no sense), but the frequent, extremely twitchy noise was more distracting than I recall on any other Blu-ray this year. It also exhibits a harsh "video" look, including an unpleasant streaking during even modest motion, and other weird anomalies.

The Sound

The audio starts off with promise, as early on we feel the subwoofer of a prom limo pounding away on a hip-hop tune. Later however, there's a chase of sorts wherein two fire trucks flank our heroes' car, sirens blaring, hoses squirting, and yet there is no surround activity whatsoever. I couldn't believe it so I double-checked, pressing my ear to the speaker. There is some rear fill elsewhere; crowds, traffic; and the occasional directional effect. But somebody dropped the ball, and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 is wasted on this movie.

The Extras

The five archived Viral Videos run 14 minutes total, and are actually funnier than the movie, for whatever that's worth. Ironically, one shows the guys working on the sound effects. A two-minute faux documentary about a supporting character, "Down & Dirty with Horsedick.mpeg," is available in censored and uncensored versions. All of the above is in standard definition. Disc Two contains a Digital Copy of the unrated Miss March for iTunes and Windows Media.

Final Thoughts

Drowning in a plethora of raunchy comedy clichés, Miss March misses the mark.  Use the money to buy a subscription to Playboy instead, y'know... for the articles.
