After being slightly underwhelmed by the Meridian
810
Reference Video System demo in New York, I
made a point to check it out again at CEDIA Expo in Denver this week. And I'm happy to report the latest demo was
far better. The earlier demonstration
suffered from a stuttering hard drive and poor video performance due to a low
quality rented screen. The Denver demo was not
without a few glitches (mostly what looked like synchronization issues on some
of the hard-drive-based demo material which caused the picture to drop in and
out on a couple of the demo clips), but when it did lock to the source, the
detail was exceptional.
Demo clips included 1080i broadcast material (Nora Jones "live"
on Leno, Gladiator from an HBO
broadcast), 1080p film content from Blu-ray Disc (Apocalypto), and 480i movie trailers. On each of the clips, the projector did a
fine job upsampling the lower resolution originals to the projector's 10
Megapixel light engine (a whopping 4096x2048 pixel resolution) courtesy of the
on-board Marvell QDEO processor. The
projector was also able to render difficult shadow details like nobody's
business. Even from just 6 feet away, on
a screen that must have been at least 12 feet diagonally, there were no visible
pixels, just crisp detail and smooth motion.
