Marantz to Ship Its First Dolby Atmos Receiver in September

By Rachel Cericola

Since the beginning of the summer, we've been talking about Dolby Atmos coming into the home. It's really all we can do, since products aren't expected to ship until this fall. Now, Marantz is making plans to deliver its first Dolby Atmos-enhanced product, the SR7009.

The SR7009 is a 9.2-channel receiver, with support for Ultra HD 4K, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the latest current feedback topology, and new Marantz HDAMs. Besides cranking up to 125 watts per channel, this model has four DSP (Digital Sound Processing) engines that allow the system to handle up to 11.2 channels. That basically means that in addition to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, this receiver can support Audyssey DSX, DTS Neo:X 11.1, and the aforementioned Dolby Atmos audio format.

Dolby Atmos allows listeners to experience sound from all directions -- including overhead. The SR7009 has the power to run a 5.1.2, 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 layout. With an additional power amplifier, however, the system can support 7.1.4 or 9.1.2 configurations. Either Dolby Atmos setup can use ceiling-mounted speakers or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.

Other features include the Audyssey MultEQ XT32/Sub EQ/LFC (Pro ready) room correction suite, eight HDMI inputs, three HDMI outputs, and a 13.2-channel pre-out capability. Also worth mentioning is that the receiver has an aluminum trapdoor on the front, to conceal control buttons and front connections.

If you're not quite ready to make the leap to Dolby Atmos just yet, Marantz will also release the SR6009 next month. This 7.2-channel receiver has many of the same features listed above, minus the Dolby Atmos support. It boasts 110 watts per channel, the 4K support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, the trapdoor design, and more. It even has Audyssey MultEQ XT room calibration (Pro ready), Audyssey DSX, and DTS-Neo:X (7.1). This model also has the eight HDMI inputs, but only two outputs. Other features include a USB port, a phono input, four Smart Select buttons, and a 7.2-channel pre-out.

Marantz will start selling both receivers sometime next month. The SR7009 is priced at $1,999, with the SR6009 getting an MSRP of $1,299.
