Major Studios Announce a Slew of New Movies to be Released in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision

By Rachel Cericola

Dolby keeps giving us reasons to go back to the theater. The company just announced 12 upcoming movies that will be released with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack, as well as an additional 14 titles that will get both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision.

As we've mentioned before, Dolby Atmos is an audio format that can put you right in the middle of the action. It delivers audio from just about every angle in the theater -- including overhead. Dolby Vision is a projection system that uses state-of-the-art optics and image processing to deliver high dynamic range with enhanced color technology and a contrast ratio that promises to exceed anything else on the market today. The end result boasts vivid and realistic images unlike you've ever seen before.

When Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision are put together, the end result is Dolby Cinema -- which is available at more than 200 sites around the world. Today's announcement will bring the total count of Dolby Cinema film titles released or announced to 38.

That number includes 14 new films, which have been scheduled for release in Dolby Cinemas between now and June 2017. STX Entertainment just released Hardcore Henry with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Next month, Disney will make Captain America: Civil War (May 6) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (May 27) an immersive experience, thanks to both formats. Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse will also hit Dolby Cinemas on May 27.

This summer, Dolby Cinemas will welcome several sequels, including Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (June 3), Disney•Pixar's highly anticipated Finding Dory (June 17), Fox's Independence Day: Resurgence (June 24), and Paramount's Star Trek Beyond (July 22). Universal will also bring the video game franchise Warcraft to the big screen with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, starting June 10.

Towards the end of the year, we can expect three additional Dolby Cinema releases. Paramount will unleash Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (October 21), Sony will have Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (November 11), and Warner Bros. will show us Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (November 18).

And just in case you aren't already pumped up to see Wonder Woman, know that the Amazon princess will get the royal treatment with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision for her June 2017 release.

Although there won't be any Dolby Vision, we can expect another 12 films to be released with Dolby Atmos. That list includes The Orchard's Hunt for the Wilderpeople (June 26), Universal's The Secret Life of Pets (July 8), Sony's Ghostbusters (July 15), Fox's Ice Age: Collision Course (July 22), Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad (August 5), Focus Features' LAIKA's Kubo and the Two Strings (August 5), Sony's Inferno (October 28) and Passengers (December 21), Paramount's Monster Trucks (January 13, 2017), Warner Bros.' The LEGO Batman Movie (February 10, 2017), and Sony's Baby Driver (March 17, 2017) and Spider-Man (July 7, 2017).

Dolby had previously announced two other Dolby Vision titles for this year. Disney's The Jungle Book will be released with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on April 15. Lionsgate's Now You See Me 2 will then follow in Dolby Cinemas everywhere on June 16, 2016.
