Lionsgate Unleashes Tarantino XX Blu-ray Box in November

By Rachel Cericola

Are you ready for a bloody good time? Lionsgate and Miramax are getting ready to honor the work of Quentin Tarantino with one big, insanely bloody Blu-ray box, known as the Tarantino XX: 8-Film Collection.

The 10-disc box will have just about everything Tarantino has ever touched, from his big-screen debut Reservoir Dogs to the recent Oscar-nominee Inglourious Basterds. The Tarantino XX: 8-Film Collection will make its Blu-ray debut on November 20, 2012.

Tarantino XX includes eight films handpicked by Tarantino, as well as two discs filled with all-new bonus material and critic commentary.

The first film is the one that set the Tarantino gold standard, 1992's Reservoir Dogs. The tale of a robbery gone awry includes quotable dialogue and a killer (!) cast with Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi, Lawrence Tierney, and Tarantino himself. The disc also includes bonus features like the "Pulp Factoids Viewer," a featurette titled "Playing It Fast and Loose," and something called "Profiling the Reservoir Dogs."

Next up is a director's cut of 1993's True Romance. Tarantino served as writer for director Tony Scott's action-packed tale of a whirlwind, uber-violent love story between Clarence (Christian Slater) and Alabama (Patricia Arquette). This one has an equally impressive supporting cast, including Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini, Gary Oldman, Michael Rapaport, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Pitt, and countless others. Expect the disc to include four separate commentaries, deleted and extended scenes, an alternative ending, a few other featurettes, and the film's theatrical trailer.

The third disc is all about Pulp Fiction, Tarantino's critically acclaimed 1994 crime drama. The film is another one filled to the brim with quotable moments, as well as countless stars including Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, and Bruce Willis. It's also well known for giving John Travolta a nice little career bump. Expect the special features section to be filled with cast interviews, a critics' retrospective, behind-the-scenes featurettes, various other shorts, awards festival footage, a trivia track, and more.

In 1997's Jackie Brown, Tarantino gives '70s icon Foxy Brown a nice little shout-out -- by having Pam Grier (aka Foxy Brown) play the title character. Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro play supporting characters in Tarantino's most underrated effort. Look for the disc to include a retrospective with the cast and crew, something called "Jackie Brown on MTV," and several other featurettes.

The box then skips a few years (and thankfully, Adam Sandler's Little Nicky) to Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2. When The Bride (Uma Thurman) is left for dead, she spends two entire movies getting her revenge. Although each movie gets its own disc, the extras between the two are slightly slim. Expect to see a making-of short for each film, music videos, one deleted scene and trailers.

Death Proof is another nice little flashback to the '70s, with Kurt Russell as a murderous stuntman who enjoys stalking young women. Well, until he chooses the wrong quartet. Don't mess with Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Zoƫ Bell, people! This disc has a short about the stunts, a piece dedicated to real-life stuntwoman Bell, several other featurettes, and BD-Live features.

Last of the movie discs is the Oscar-nominated Inglourious Basterds. In this critically acclaimed film, Tarantino adds a bit of a faux historical twist to his madness (and Brad Pitt!), focusing on two groups looking to assassinate Hitler. The disc includes extedned and deleted scenes, several featurettes, the film-within-a-film Nation's Pride, and a roundtable with Tarantino, Pitt and Elvis Mitchell.

The final two discs are all extras, with a lengthy look at Tarantino's films under something called "Critics Corner" and an in-depth documentary titled "20 Years of Filmmaking."

Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Death Proof will come packing a 2.35:1 image, with True Romance, the two Kill Bill installments and Inglourious Basterds including a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. Jackie Brown is the lone flick with a 1.85:1 image.

As far as audio is concerned, it's a bit more of a mixed bag. Reservoir Dogs is listed with DTS-HD Master Audio and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX tracks. True Romance and Death Proof will get Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown will come with a lone DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 will come with a 5.1 uncompressed track, along with Dolby Digital 5.1. Inglourious Basterds will have DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks.

Lionsgate has listed Tarantino XX will an MSRP of $119.95. Amazon is currently taking pre-orders for the set at a reduced price, with the retailer's pre-order price guarantee in place.
